Let’s play Jenga

For many of us, mobility issues are an unfortunate side effect of aging. So, we brought on board Dr. Shabbir Akbarally who shared with us some extremely interesting and enlightening details on how to stay healthy and the importance of stretching and exercising daily.  Doc was kept busy answering the numerous questions from our members. Practical examples of how these exercises should be done, was also explained by him. Thank you Dr. Shabbir for taking time of your busy practice to be with us.

We welcomed two new members today, who immediately got into the swing of the day’s events.

It was now time wake up our brains with a brain teaser, and we played a game called Rebus. A very interesting and humorous puzzle in which words are represented by combinations of pictures and individual letters. We watched as the teams competed intensely to find the solutions.

Patience and strategy was required for our next game, Jenga. The teams had to stack 36 wooden blocks to build a tower and then take turns strategically moving pieces, but at the same time not allowing the tower to fall over. Very steady hands are needed for this.  Hurrah for the team that had removed 20 blocks and narrowly won this game.

Spelling Bee

We’ve all laboured through spellings in school, so today we decided to have some fun with them. Besides solving puzzles and a game of trivial pursuit, The Senior Station conducted its very first Spelling Bee competition! There were heated discussions among the team members – ‘is playwright spelt as playwrite or the other way round, does harass have one s and two r’s, and is pronunciation really spelt as pronounciation. It’s amazing how these tricky words continue to fox us.

We had four new members today and they all received a warm welcome. It’s a small world indeed, because a member discovered that one of new comers was a childhood friend whom he hadn’t met in a while and was really happy to see.  And Nihal, who had his birthday a few days ago, treated everyone to the most delicious brownies, which his wife had freshly baked. What a lovely Tuesday morning we had!

Collage Day

Thank you Sajeda Akbarally for conducting the exercise session at The Senior Station. Sajeda is a fitness trainer who has behind her years of experience working with people with different profiles. This Tuesday, she brought tons of energy to The Senior Stations with a routine that included chair and standing exercises.  Sajeda was really impressed with how enthusiastically the members kept up with her and completed the entire routine.

After all that muscle pumping we threw ourselves in to a quiz with a twist – Statements about interesting and bizarre bits of information were given to the members and we had to identify which were fact or fiction. The quiz inspired heated and fun debates among the team members and we all came away learning something new.  We were now ready for our arts project – Teams had to create mosaic like collages made with colourful bits of paper. The collages were fabulous and the themes were quite incredible indeed!!

Memory Games

Every first Tuesday of the month, The Senior Station has a special celebration for all those who have their birthdays during that month. Today we celebrated the March birthdays with cake and song.; and Miriam and Nihal were thrilled as their new friends at The Senior Station greeted them heartily.

We also decided to challenge our memories with different games that forced us to remember details that were thrown our way. A simple ball game for example helped us map who was in the room and where. Then there was that timeless memory game  – ‘We Are Going To The Market To Buy……’ Dolly had everyone foxed as she sped through various items on the marketing list. After more words games and mind-benders, we all relaxed and mingled over cups of tea, delicious treats from Paan Paan and of course yummy chocolate cake.

Today was our first day at the new premises. Here onwards our sessions will take place at the Ladies College Vocational Centre.

80 is the new 50

“80 is the new 50” said Dr. Razia Pendse, the Country Representative for the World Health Organization who spoke to members at The Senior Station today.  She explained that given the rapid social, physical and technological changes around us, it’s imperative that senior citizens stay positive and independent. She quizzed members on their hobbies and asked them to take pride in what they do. She advised members to stay healthy by eating the right foods, exercising and going for regular health checks.         Dr. Razia shared real life stories of individuals who reinvented themselves after retirement, and one who even went back to studying. “Explore your dreams,” she urged our members “Everyone has got to have a dream that makes life worth living.”  A big thank you Dr Razia, we were truly inspired by your session.

A big thank you also to Dr. Yussry, who once again enthralled us with his catchy tunes. We all clapped and swayed as he strummed his guitar and sang all our favourite songs. It wasn’t long before Sheila who is the life of the party at The Senior Station got on to the floor and got everyone else to join in as well.

Today was our last session at Gower Street.  From next Tuesday, The Senior Station sessions will be conducted at the premises of the Ladies College Institute of Professional Studies, 27th Lane, Inner Flower Road Colombo 3. It’s going to be a new place, but the program will be just as rewarding and fun. We look forward to seeing you there!
